Newcastle 02 Academy May 14thFor two nights in May, the Newcastle Upon Tyne based quintet took over the 02 Academy. They are on the road to promote their third long player, ‘Quicken The Heart’. You have to admire them as they have survived the recent cull of mid noughties bands and pushed onto different levels. After the amazing success of their debut, the band built on it with a good second album but the third album may be more successful but has it got the tunes? In my opinion it hasn't and live gigs only highlight the gulf in pop class between their third album and their debut. Tracks like recent single 'The Kids Are Sick Again' and 'Wreathlike' are highlights of their new material. Sadly there aren't many moments of brilliance in the new songs. In terms of their live performance, they are brilliant as ever with Paul Smith jumping around and posing like its his final day on this earth. They end the night with ‘Apply Some Pressure’ and the crowd went home happy after an energetic and engaging set. www.maximopark.com Videos: http://www.youtube.com/user/IanTodd82 |

St Crispin's Got Our Backs One Little Indian Epic indie from the UK based Seven piece and it is taken from their critically acclaimed debut album. After touring with the likes of The Spinto Band, they have picking up their fair share of press coverage. It is very twee and very early noughties and could be on the soundtrack of the old Channel 4 show, Teachers. It is something which is epic and wears its heart on it's sleeve. It's not my type of music, but I appreciate the craft behind romantics ideals of their widescreen pop.

The Cluny Byker 8th March The London via North Wales trio were first act on the Newcastle leg of the JD set. They blasted through an attention grabbing set. They were like The Duke Spirit injected with the spirit of Elastica. I am sure they will be stars of the summer festival, packing a pop punch with a rock edge. They have been getting column inches of hype as they slowly build up and this opening slot has done their credentials no harm. A band to look out for and a band to believe in amongst the copycat indie bands, an exciting discovery.
