by christ this record makes me want to jump up and down like a young jack nicholson with a head full of up-up-uppers and a sly wry grin plastered across my handsome mug. no.† really. there are bands and records out there that manage the magikal task of making me feel really young and really old at the same time. †see be your own pet.† see the (in)aptly named no age.† see hawnay troof.† you know when you go to a gig and you feel like some creepy old uncle at a party, like some seedy old peeper who's not quite skinny or firm or tightly jeaned enough.† you know where hitting on a girl is legally inadvisable.† when you're one of the few dudes in a room allowed to purchase anything other than diet pepsi from the bar. maybe it means i'm vainly clinging to the last vestigal scraps of my youth.† maybe it means i don't have to conform to your social boundaries, man.† maybe this shit should transcend age.† maybe. so how does this translate to what yr actually listening to? well as you might have guessed hawnay troof deal in eternally adolescent spastic energy.† it bounces and throbs and pulses with hyperactive intent. †it has energy, mad giddy heady energy, heartbursting, stroke inducing rush of blood to the goddam head thirty minutes of big smiley joy.† like an episode of animaniacs starring dr teeth and the electric fucking†mayhem churning out rave noise dance hiphop pop funk punk club that's not all clean and shiny and overproduced.† it's hi-fi lo-fi fly-by the seat of yr torn pants, semi-made up sounding, uber-bassed, fucked and pushy yet gentle and intimate, born of parties and galleries and basements and sweatdripping clubs, born of diversity and a whatever-the-fuck-i'm-listening-to-now record collection.† a stewing broth, a frothing cauldron of beats and tunes who's insides are all wrong.† on front my hope and underneath the ocean it almost sounds like battles' kid brother. it is (does). †really. friends and tourers and collaborators and references including but not exclusive to: no age, erase errata, barr, mates of state, stereo total, gravy train, quintron and miss pussycat, coachwips, glass candy, lightning bolt, bratmobile and gravy train, deerhoof, sleater kinney, numbers, gay against you, the death set, dan deacon, xiu xiu. his name is vice cooler. no.† really. i dare you not to dance.
